Using Peer Observation to Branch into STEM Curricula Through Patent Education

Session Description 

To address a lack of patent knowledge among students and faculty, a group of academic subject librarians used our new peer observation group to integrate patent awareness through library instruction to STEM classes. Join us for an engaging and informative session, as we share best practices and lessons learned.

Presenters 

Sandy Avila, University of Central Florida
Sandy is the Science Librarian in the Research and Information Services Department at the UCF Libraries. She is the subject librarian for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, CREOL, and the NanoScience Technology Center. Her research interests include: emerging technologies in education, online learning, and STEM-related programming and instruction. Sandy handles library instruction, research consultations, and collection development to her assigned subject liaison departments.

Buenaventura "Ven" Basco, University of Central Florida
Buenaventura (Ven) Basco is currently working as Associate University Librarian at the University of Central Florida. He is the subject librarian for the College of Engineering and Computer Science, supporting the research of faculty and developing information literary instruction programs for all students in the College. 

Rachel Edford, University of Central Florida
Rachel Edford is an Assistant Instruction & Engagement Librarian at UCF Libraries. Prior to working at UCF, Rachel taught college English for several years at colleges and universities in Oregon and Florida. Her research interests include library instruction pedagogy and intersections between library science and writing studies.

Rebecca "Missy" Murphey, University of Central Florida
Missy has been a Research and Information Services librarian at the University of Central Florida libraries since 2010. She is currently the Patent and Trademark Resource Center librarian at the Orlando PTRC, as well as providing research assistance (in-person and via AAL), library instruction, outreach services, and collection management for the Anthropology and Sociology departments. Missy came to UCF from the University of Mississippi, where she held various duties in reference and instruction, government documents, and the AICPA library service.
