Programs for People with Diverse Abilities

This presentation will discuss four types of inclusive programs for people with disabilities. This break-out session will include a description of innovative programs that appeal to audiences with low vision, arthritis, hearing loss, autism and cognitive and mobility challenges. The following programs will be covered with an overview of preparation, staffing, budgets, partners and equipment. Etiquette when presenting to people with disabilities will also be discussed.

Jennifer Shipley brings over two decades of library management experience to her role at the Miami-Dade Public Library System. As Library Operations Manager, she oversees diverse units, leads staff meetings, and ensures excellent customer service. With a passion for community engagement, Jennifer has been featured in media interviews and has presented at conferences on topics including literacy and disability services. Her dedication has earned her several awards, including eight National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards and recognition from the Southeast Florida Library Information Network (SEFLIN), Florida International University Learning for Life program and local Rotary Clubs for her commitment to library excellence and community impact.

Carmen A. Baker is a library services specialist with the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS). She has more than 20 years of experience in youth services, programming, and general librarianship, and manages the MDPLS local author series and fair, which won a 2020 National Association of Counties (NACo) achievement award. Ms. Baker has also received the SEFLIN Summit award for developing programming for infants and the visually impaired and has represented MDPLS internationally by hosting early literacy workshops at libraries in Medellin, Colombia, and Madrid, Spain.
