Unleashing the Power of Digital Literacy through Innovative Community Outreach

Libraries continue to be in the forefront of providing technology education programs in an increasingly digital world. Free computer and technology classes, open computer lab access, and 1-on-1 tech tutoring sessions are some of the more popular services that positively impact our patrons' digital literacy needs. Despite the modest success, there are still a number of opportunities for libraries to grow. According to the Pew Research Libraries and Crossroads Report (2016), 94% of the study's respondents said libraries should offer technology-related services but only 7% have actually attended a program. There remains a gap in the public awareness as well as barriers for potential participants from low income families, seniors, patrons with disabilities, and new immigrants.
