Session Description 

Although there are a variety of resources available to help librarians create authentic learning experiences for students at the academic level, discussions of these resources often focus on theoretical uses rather than practical applications. This program will provide a “toolkit” that librarians can deploy to create lesson for university students.

Presenters 

Dr. Elana Karshmer, FIU
Elana Karshmer is the Head of Information & Research Services at Florida International University. She completed her M.A. (L.I.S.) and PhD in English at USF. In 2009 Elana was named an American Library Association Emerging Leader, and in 2014, she and Jacalyn Bryan won the ALA Library Instruction Roundtable’s Innovation in Instruction award for their work with first-year students. Elana was elected president of the Florida Library Association in 2015. She has presented extensively on library instruction and the ACRL Framework both domestically and internationally. Elana’s dissertation is on postcolonial literature, focusing on the work of South African women writers.

Ramces Marsilli, FIU
Ramces Marsilli is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at Florida International University where he serves as the liaison to the schools of Education, and Architecture. Ramces holds a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Florida State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. He has presented at SEFLIN, FLA, and served as moderator for a panel discussion on Intellectual Freedom and Open Access Publishing at the 2017 ALA Conference. His interests include Outreach, Information Literacy Instruction, and the history of South Florida.
